A Haven for Nature Lovers and Families: My Visit to Garrett Williamson

Nestled amidst the hustle and bustle of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, this 240-acre haven offered a surprising oasis of tranquility. Our purpose? To learn more about this unique non-profit and share its story with all of you.

Carol Kaplan Ruark, the Executive Director of Garrett Williamson, greeted us with a warm smile. As we settled onto the porch swing, the gentle breeze rustling the leaves provided a calming backdrop to our conversation.

A Legacy Rooted in Giving

“Our story starts back in the early 1900s with Elizabeth Garrett. This very property belonged to her family.”

Intrigued, I leaned in to listen. “And what inspired her to establish Garrett Williamson?”

“Elizabeth had a deep love for nature and a desire to support women and children,” Carol explained. “She envisioned a place where they could escape the city and connect with the natural world. In 1912, she made that vision a reality by establishing Garrett Williamson.”

A Place Where Learning Comes Alive

Over the years, Garrett Williamson has evolved to meet the needs of the community. Today, they offer a variety of programs focused on early childhood education, agriculture, and environmental stewardship.

“We have childcare for children aged six weeks to kindergarten,” Carol shared. “And during the summer months, our camp program allows kids from rising first grade all the way up to 15 years old to explore the outdoors and learn valuable skills.”

But what truly sets Garrett Williamson apart is its place-based education approach.

“We use the entire property as our classroom,” Carol explained. “Children can learn about different animals by visiting our farm, explore the wonders of nature through hikes on our trails, and even get their hands dirty in our gardens.”

This immersive approach to learning fosters a deep appreciation for the environment and ignites a sense of curiosity in young minds.

A Vibrant Community Hub

Beyond its educational programs, Garrett Williamson serves as a vital hub for the Newtown Square community.

“We partner with local businesses and organizations,” Carol explained. “We also host events throughout the year, like our Harvest Festival, which is a fantastic opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the fall season.”

These events not only provide entertainment but also serve as a reminder of Elizabeth Garrett’s vision. They ensure that everyone, regardless of financial background, has the opportunity to experience the beauty and wonder of Garrett Williamson.

Giving Back: It’s All About Community

As our conversation progressed, it became clear that Carol and her team are passionate about making a difference.

“We rely heavily on the support of our community,” Carol admitted. “There are many ways people can get involved, whether it’s volunteering their time, donating to our scholarship program, or simply spreading the word about our mission.”

The opportunity to give back and ensure all families have access to Garrett Williamson’s programs is truly inspiring.

A Glimpse into the Future

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting an ethereal glow over the property, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of optimism for the future of Garrett Williamson.

“We’re constantly looking for ways to grow,” Carol shared, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “We want to expand our partnerships, welcome more volunteers, and continue to provide exceptional experiences for generations to come.”

There’s no doubt that Garrett Williamson will continue to thrive under Carol’s leadership. Its commitment to environmental education, fostering a strong community spirit, and enriching the lives of children makes it a true gem in the heart of Newtown Square.
